The Essential Elements of Art—A Crash Course

Saturday, July 31, 10am-1pm

Arts & Heritage Center, 100 Georgia Ave, North Augusta

Many people begin painting and working with color without ever learning some essentials that make a painting or drawing successful. The elements of art by definition are what artists focus on while making art, therefore not understanding these leads to frustration and limitations for those who dream of becoming better artists.

If you are ready for a breakthrough in your understanding of what underlying building blocks are necessary for a good painting, this “crash course” will be offered as a mini-workshop to help you toward your goals. Covered topics will include space, line, texture, shape, form, value, using the elements in composition with contrast and unity, balance, rhythm, and depth and overlapping. There will be a session on doing value studies as preliminaries to your paintings. If a composition doesn’t work as a value study, nothing magic will happen to make it a good painting in color, either, so you can eliminate wasted time and frustration in your potential subject matter. Though color is another art element, it is best explored after learning the other art elements, which are used in drawing.

The instructor for the workshop is Pamela Poole. Cost is $30. Materials for this workshop are a sketchbook or drawing paper, drawing pencils in a range of lightness values (about 4 should be enough, with a dark, middle, and light gray), and/or value sketching markers like the Prismacolor ones in light, mid, and dark gray.
